J.K. Rowling Announces New Spin-off Film Series

J.K. Rowling announced today in a new partnership with Warner Bros. that she will be working on a new film series set in the magical world. Rowling is set to make her screenwriting debut in the first of the new series which will follow Hogwarts Textbook author Newt Scamander. In the Harry Potter novels, Scamander is identified as the author of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

Rowling announced the project with the following message:

“It all started when Warner Bros. came to me with the suggestion of turning Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them into a film. I thought it was a fun idea, but the idea of seeing Newt Scamander, the supposed author of Fantastic Beasts, realized by another writer was difficult. Having lived for so long in my fictional universe, I feel very protective of it and I already knew a lot about Newt. As hard-core Harry Potter fans will know, I liked him so much that I even married his grandson, Rolf, to one of my favourite characters from the Harry Potter series, Luna Lovegood. As I considered Warners’ proposal, an idea took shape that I couldn’t dislodge. That is how I ended up pitching my own idea for a film to Warner Bros.

Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for 17 years,
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry’s gets underway. I particularly want to thank Kevin Tsujihara of Warner Bros. for his support in this project, which would not have happened without him. I always said that I would only revisit the wizarding world if I had an idea that I was really excited about and this is it.”

The announcement has also sparked the recently ended Harry Potter Podcast, MuggleCast, back into action only a little more than two weeks after its official final episode.

Rowling's First 'Post-Potter' Novel Coming

Jo has wrapped up the monstrous Harry Potter series with an impressive 400 million copies floating around the globe, and now, nearly five years later, is setting her sights on completion of a new novel - with a different publisher.

The London based Little, Brown and Company is the lucky new home of the Potter author's new work. Both publisher and author are said to be delighted with this arrangement. Rowling cited the boy wizard's success as a springboard for future endeavors, resulting in the decision to change publishers.

"The freedom to explore new territory is a gift that Harry's success has brought me," says Rowling, "and with that new territory it seemed a logical progression to have a new publisher."

Rowling maintains that although she enjoyed writing the new novel "every bit as much" as the Harry Potter series, it will be distinctly different from her previous works.

More information is expected on the new novel later this year, including a title and release date.
